On August 16, 2005 the Unified Sportsmen of Pennsylvania filed a lawsuit in
Commonwealth Court alleging capricious and arbitrary deer management by state
agencies that has resulted in a dramatic decline to our state animal. This
massive deer reduction plan is unjustified, unscientific, and unprecedented
in the history of the Commonwealth. The PGC and DCNR have never conducted a
scientific deer census to substantiate such action, and have no reliable system
to track our deer harvest. Therefore the USP has petitioned the court to request
the PA Game Commission to present scientific evidence and documentation which
supports this initiative, and to prevent future and possible irreparable
harm to our deer herd. No compensatory damages are sought by the USP.
The majority of Pennsylvania deer hunters are convinced that the PGC deer reduction
plan is irresponsible, and destroying our deer hunting heritage for this and
future generations. The lawsuit is designed to restore scientific credibility
and hunter confidence back to Pennsylvania’s deer management plan, and
prevent the $5 Billion hunting industry from fading into obscurity.
In all probability this lawsuit will have enormous implications in deer management
for years to come, assuming we have adequate funding to see it through to a
resolution. The lawsuit will most likely move out of Commonwealth Court and
into a Court of Appeals, whereby costing thousands of dollars in legal fees.
This gallant effort by the USP to protect and preserve our deer hunting tradition
deserves the full support of all sportsmen who are represented by this courageous
